Betsy Devos is the current chairperson of Windquest Group, a privately owned multi-company group that invests in clean energy, technology, and manufacturing. Betsy founded the firm with Dick DeVos, her husband. Betsy went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree. Betsy has served on the boards of several charitable and civic organizations both locally and nationally. Some of them are Kids Hope USA and Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Betsy’s involvement in education

She has served as the chairperson of American Federation for Children the leading choice advocacy group in the United States. Through the federation, she has fought boldly for reforms in the education sector that have given parents more options for their kids’ education. Because of her work, more than a million children are now schooling in schools of their choice rather than being restricted by zipping codes in schools that do not suit their needs.

Betsy has also started new education opportunities in West Michigan. Together with her husband dick, they started West Michigan Aviation Academy in 2010, a public charter high school that was inspired by their love for education and Dicks love for aviation. Through their philanthropic foundation, they have also donated millions of dollars. Betsy began her political involvement more than three decades ago as a volunteer for President Gerald R. Ford. Although her participation has included several leadership roles, her focus has always been education reforms and choice. She has served as the chairperson of Michigan Republican Party from 1996 to 2005 and has served on the Republican National Committee.

Betsy said that visiting underprivileged kids at Potter’s House Christian School together with her husband is what inspired them to keep going back to the school to support individual students, which later grew to a larger commitment. Their kids also played a bigger part in them expanding their philanthropy, despite the fact that they could afford better schools for them, they felt it was only fair that others get the same. Both Betsy and her husband became politically involved in matters of education. In fact, they were involved in passing the first charter-school bill in 1993. She went ahead to describe how she and Dick have been involved in education politically.

On her greatest achievement, Betsy said it is the tax-credit scholarship program in Florida. The program has enabled Florida to have the best broad education choices in the US, and as the program expands, more students are attending the school of their choices. She also mentioned the progress in Louisiana and Indiana.

On her long-term hopes, Betsy would like technology given enough attention. Programs that can help students with what the lecturer is teaching may be ideal for the future. On matters of homeschooling, Betsy was not against the idea. She was also in support of charter schools.
